David Fincher's The Social Network Empty
PostSubject: David Fincher's The Social Network   David Fincher's The Social Network EmptySat Jul 03, 2010 11:54 am

David Fincher is attached to alot of projects at the minute, he really is spoilt for choice. The critical and commercial success of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) have made him a truly hot property. He's best known for darker films, like Se7en (1995), Fight Club (1999) and Zodiac (2007). But, for his latest film, he's chosen a story you wouldn't expect him to do. And you may roll your eyes, but looking at the first publicity, it could fit in with the likes of Fight Club. Yep, David Fincher has done a Facebook film with The Social Network, and may not be as bad as people think.

Based on Ben Mezrich's 2009 book The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding Of Facebook, A Tale of Sex, Money, Genius, and Betrayal. This tells the story of Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg). a Harvard student who in 2004 founded the site with his roommates and fellow computer science students Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield), Dustin Moskovitz (Joseph Mazzello) and Chris Hughes (Patrick Mapel). At first, it was only limited to people on the Harvard campus, then it spread to other campuses in the area. Then worldwide, with the help of Napster co-founder Sean Parker (Justin Timberlake), who helped advise them along the way. However, after internal differences with Zuckerberg, co-founder Eduardo Saverin leaves the company, and ends up suing Zuckerberg,

It's not the sort of film you'd expect Fincher to take on, but the story of how Facebook came to be is a story of corruption and power. It's being written for the screen by Aaron Sorkin, who created The West Wing, and wrote films such as A Few Good Men and Charlie Wilson's War. It doesn't look as bad as some believe. But, Fincher has assembled a good cast for this, Eisenberg was good in Adventureland and Zombieland, Timberlake was the best thing in films like Southland Tales and The Love Guru, while Andrew Garfield has become the new Spiderman!! Very Happy Fincher has assembled an equally good crew, he's working again with Jeff Cronenweth after Fight Club. And the film will be scored by Trent Reznor off Nine Inch Nails!! Very Happy Reznor said of the film "Speaking of the film... it's really f**king good. And dark!" With Fincher, isn't that a good thing??

Is anyone sold on this now?? As we all know, David Fincher doesn't make bad films, even Alien3 had it's charms. But, Fincher is entitled to a change, even Benjamin Button proved he can do something beautiful. Fincher will be a busy man for a while, he's planning on doing Steig Larsson's Millennium book trilogy, even though they've all been made in Sweden. He's got Torso, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea and Heavy Metal to do. But, for now, we have this. Kevin Spacey is producing this, and he says "said "The Social Network is probably going to be a lot funnier than people might expect it to be." Is that a good thing?? We'll have to wait and see when it opens. Alot of us use Facebook, will Fincher's take on it's origins put us off??

Given the director and writer it's fair to say I had high expectations for this and it doesn't disappoint! Really superb stuff.
The story is more interesting than it perhaps sounds on paper and the script, music and acting are all excellent.

I'd never heard of Andrew Garfield until he was announces as Spider-man, but now having seen him in two films in a week (this and Lions for Lambs) I think he's going to be a real star.

I like Fincher and I like Sorkin, but I have no real desire to see this at the cinema. I'm not sure why that is.
