The Coen Brothers' True Grit Empty
PostSubject: The Coen Brothers' True Grit   The Coen Brothers' True Grit EmptyMon Mar 01, 2010 11:28 pm

Now they have Oscar gold after No Country for Old Men, and A Serious Man getting surprise nominations this year, it seems that Joel and Ethan Coen, once darlings of the indie movie scene, can now get whatever they want made, Hollywood is at their command. But, for their next film, they're going to adapt another book, one that was made into a film 40 years ago starring John Wayne and Glen Campbell. But don't go thinking it's remake, oh no. The Coen's are doing a very faithful adaptation, and it's a proper western adventure. Yep, Cinema's greatest brother directors are taking Charles Portis' True Grit, and they're gonna do it justice!!

It's the story of Mattie Ross (played by newcomer Hailee Steinfeld), a fourteen year old girl who wants to avenge the death of her father at the hands of drifter Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin). No-one seems to be up to the task of helping Mattie out, but then she gets the help of an alcoholic U.S. Marshal named Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges) and a handsome Texas Ranger called La Boeuf (Matt Damon). The trio head into Indian country to find Chaney.

Although some were dubious of the Coen's doing True Grit, (memories of The Ladykillers still linger), they've made it clear that this is not a remake. The 1969 film did deviate from Charles Portis' book, focusing more on John Wayne's Rooster Cogburn. But, the Coen's are putting the attention on Mattie Ross in this film. The Coen's have proven they can work well adaptations of books, look at No Country for Old Men. Oh, and O Brother, Where Art Thou? was inspired by The Odyssey by Homer. Razz

As for the cast, they've done well, they've made a brilliant choice for the role of Rooster Cogburn, Jeff Bridges is one of the best actors working today, often underrated, this is a perfect part for him. He of course worked with the Coens on The Big Lebowski, but this will be different from the Dude. But, Bridges says he's up to it!! Matt Damon is another good choice, and he's worked with the best directors, and now he can add the Coen's to the list!! Josh Brolin worked with the Coen's on No Country, so he'll make a good villian here.

This is the book, and it's a good read.

So, anyone up for True Grit?? The Coen's don't make bad films, (even Intolerable Cruelty and The Ladykillers have their charms and moments), but this has attracted alot of attention. Steven Spielberg is producing it with them, (who'd have guessed they'd work together?) Filming starts in New Mexico on March 15th and Paramount Pictures have it down for release on Christmas Day 2010. Could this be an Oscar contender for next year?? We'll wait and see!! Very Happy
