David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis Empty
PostSubject: David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis   David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis EmptyWed Nov 09, 2011 10:03 pm

David Cronenberg is Canada's best filmmaker. From his gory yet intelligent horror films of the 1970's and 1980's, to his challenging, controversial adaptations of Naked Lunch (1991) and Crash (1996). His work is always above and beyond everyone elses in their look, style and feel. He went commercial with A History of Violence (2005) and Eastern Promises (2007), and it won him critical plaudits worldwide. He's just finished A Dangerous Method (2011), which is a big departure for him, but is also getting acclaim. While A Dangerous Method was in post-production, he turned his attention to an adaptation of Don DeLillo's 2003 novel Cosmopolis, which was touted as a modern day take of James Joyce's Ulysses. In Cronenberg's hands it looks and sounds like another great film, quite uncoventional but daring, (most of it takes place in a limo), but it'll also show a new side to it's lead actor.

Cosmopolis follows the day in the life of young billionaire Eric Packer (Robert Pattinson), who is taking a limo drive across Manhattan to get a haircut, but today, nothing seems to go right. There's traffic jams across the city because the President is in town, a funeral procession is holding things up, and there's a riot. Plus, Packer has just lost a load of money on the stock market, betting on the rise of the Yen, and THEN he loses his wife. All in the space of 24 hours.

While the plot reads like a comedy, it certainly isn't a comedy, this looks to be a dark, cynical drama about what can happen in a day. While R-Pattz is known for being a vampire in the Twilight films, here he looks more mature, more bad-ass, and Cronenberg will get the best out of him. And Cronenberg has got a good supporting cast too, including Paul Giamatti, Samantha Morton, Mathieu Amalric and Juliette Binoche!!

A New Cronenberg film is always a cause for excitement, and it's good that he's got another one made so soon after A Dangerous Method, he has a few in various stages of planning at the moment including a sequel to Eastern Promises and As She Climbed Across the Table. This is actually the first one he's done the screenplay for since eXistenZ (1999). He should write more original stuff though, get back to horror and weird character names. Razz But, this looks interesting, and it'll be interesting to see what he can do with Robert Pattinson, and show there's more to him than Edward Cullen. Razz
