| Subject: The Coen Brothers' Hail, Caesar! Sun Nov 16, 2014 12:37 am | |
| It's always good news when the Coen Brothers announce a new film, they might have gone mainstream since the Oscar victory of No Country for Old Men (2007), but they've never sold out. They might have been tempted a few times, as seen with Intolerable Cruelty (2003) and The Ladykillers (2004), but they've always done things their way. After the financial success of True Grit (2010), they could have gone bigger and better, but no, they went in the opposite direction for their nezt film. Inside Llewyn Davis (2013), a quirky drama focused on the on the folk music scene of New York in 1961, done on a low budget and done independently, it showed the Coen's still remain true to their independent roots. For their next film, they're heading to Hollywood, for an all star mainstream comedy, but this is an idea they've had for a while, and it's been reworked a few times until they got the plot right. Hail, Caesar might see the Coen's back working with old friends, but it looks set to be great fun to watch. Set in Hollywood in the 1950's, it tells the story of Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin), a fixer working for the Hollywood studios, desperately trying to keep famous actors in line, but he's about to have a very bad day, when one of the biggest stars he's associated with, Baird Whitlock (George Clooney), is kidnapped while filming a Roman epic, and Mannix has other problems on his plate to deal with as well! From the brief synopsis, this sounds like perfect comedic material for the Coen's, plus for the cast, along with Clooney and Brolin, they've brought in some old friends with Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton and Scarlett Johansson, but they've also brought some new faces to their team, including Ralph Fiennes, Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill and Christopher Lambert!! Filming started on Monday, they're reunited with cinematographer Roger Deakins and the Coens are back with Working Title producing the film. It'll be released on February 5th 2016.
