PostSubject: Steven Spielberg's Bridge of Spies   Sat Jun 06, 2015 1:41 am

Steven Spielberg returns!! After the success of Lincoln (2012), Spielberg has spent a year or two planning his follow up. He had been attached to Robopocalypse, but that was postponed due to script issues, he was also attached to Montezuma, from a 50 year old screenplay by Dalton Trumbo. Again, nothing came of that. Spielberg was briefly attached to American Sniper, but he passed and Clint Eastwood ran with it. But, he soon found his next project in a script called St. James Place, written by English playwright Matt Charman. Spielberg saw something in it, and attached himself to direct it. The script, revised by Joel and Ethan Coen, became Bridge of Spies see's Spielberg taking on the Cold War, but he's got a good cast together.

It tells the true story of the 1960 U-2 incident, in which lawyer James B. Donovan (Tom Hanks), who is sent over the Iron Curtain to negotiate the release of Francis Gary Powers (Austin Stowell) a pilot whose plane was shot down over Soviet Russia, in exchange for Soviet spy Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance).

It's a good idea for a film, and it feels relevant even now, with the Cold War starting to heat up once again. But, judging from the trailer, it looks set to be a politically charged film, like Munich (2005) was, but not as dark. Spielberg has put together a good cast, and it's great to see him back with Tom Hanks once again, and the cast is rounded out with Mark Rylance, hot off playing Thomas Cromwell in Wolf Hall, and the great Alan Alda.

It opens on October 16th, and it looks good. While it looks like it'll be a courtroom potboiler in the synopsis, the trailer makes it look like much more than that, it shows what East Berlin was really like, brutal and unforgiving under the Nazi's. Spielberg went to Berlin to make it too, and filmed at the historic Babelsberg Studios. Unfortunately, John Williams passed on scoring this one due to a minor illness, but Thomas Newman stepped up to the podium, and will no doubt compose a rich score. But Williams will return for Spielberg's next film, which reunites him with Mark Rylance, the eagerly awaited adaptation of The BFG!! Very Happy
