Disney's The Princess and the Frog Empty
PostSubject: Disney's The Princess and the Frog   Disney's The Princess and the Frog EmptyFri Aug 01, 2008 7:50 am

It's been 4 years since Disney last released a traditional animated film, Home On The Range, and at the time it was thought it would be their last ever such film, with the company announcing they would be focusing solely on CG animations. Since then, they've bought up Pixar and the new heads of the animation department wanted to revisit 2d animations. As a result, John Musker and Ron Clements, directors of two of Disney's biggest hits - The Little Mermaid and Aladdin - are now making the studios 48th animated film, The Princess and The Frog, a fairytale musical set in New Orleans in the 1920s.

There has been some controversy regarding the film. The heroine of the movie, Tiana, is the first black Disney Princess. Originally she was named Maddy and was a chambermaid, an occupation that was percieved as stereotypical and not in keeping with other Disney Princesses. The villain of the piece is a voodoo magician, and this has also led to some criticism.

It features the vocal talents of John Goodman, Kieth David, Angela Bassett, Jim Cumming and, as Tiana, Anika Noni Rose. It won't be released until Christmas 2009, but here's a teaser trailer.

I have to say I'm glad Disney have gone back to 2D films. Their 3D features only work when Pixar are involved, and it'd be a shame if one of the greatest of all animation houses closed doors forever on a style of film-making that gave us so many classics. I'm hoping that this film has the humour, style and tone of the features from the last 80s, early 90s when Disney had a string of modern masterpieces.

I knew Home on the Range wouldn't be their last 2-D film, it was a mere 6 months after they said it was the last one, that this one was announced... tongue

I have to admit the animation style in the teaser trailer reminds me of the animated bits in Enchanted, maybe that's what inspired them to do this... tongue Plus, I like the idea of 1920's New Orleans as a setting!! Wink
