Subject: Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby Sun Feb 20, 2011 11:38 pm
Despite the fact he's only directed 4 films since 1992, Baz Luhrmann's films have captured the hearts and imagination of cinemagoers the world over. Strictly Ballroom was his debut that became an international hit, his rendition of Romeo + Juliet (1996) brought Shakespeare into the 1990's, then he brought the musical kicking and screaming into the 21st Century with Moulin Rouge! (2001), his biggest hit. Then he made his romantic epic Australia (2008), which was "his Gone With The Wind". Now, Baz is turning to a literary classic for his next film. He's taking on F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1925 novel The Great Gatsby, which Baz is calling "his most personal film", and he's the right man to do it too!!
It focuses on the lives of a group of rich socialites on Long Island. Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) is drawn into the lavish lifestyle of his rich neighbour Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Nick's second cousin Daisy Buchanan (Amanda Seyfried). Though drawn into this right lifestyle, Nick soon learns the unhappiness of it.
Baz is perfect for this, and he's got a good cast for this, it's good to see him work with Leo again, and Tobey Maguire is always welcome. (He and Leo have been friends for years). But, Baz has also got A.R. Rahman to compose the film's score too!! After a little bit of uncertainty, Baz has got the money together for The Great Gatsby!! Warner Bros. have got the rights, Filming starts shooting in Sydney, Australia in August for 17 weeks, followed by 30 weeks of post-production!! Oh, and it's being filmed in 3D.
It's great to see Baz Luhrmann back doing films, and he's chosen a good one. He's a good director with a good visual eye, and Australia showed a new side to him, less zany than Strictly Ballroom and Moulin Rouge! Something epic and emotional, lavish and awe-inspiring. He had planned an Alexander The Great film, only to be beaten by Oliver Stone, which would have used the same epic sensibilities Australia would have had. Either way, Leonardo DiCaprio is going to be very busy this year, first Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar, then this. The Great Gatsby has been adapted before, but Baz will do it justice!!

I like the costumes they had in the 1920's.

TRAILER!!
It looks like what Baz did for 19th Century Paris in Moulin Rouge, he's going to do for 1920's New York. It looks brilliant though, but will 3D add anything to it??

Warner Bros. push the film back to June 2013, to allow Baz more time to fine tune it...
Pity, I wanted to see who won on the Leo Vs. Leo showdown on Christmas Day as well. Then again, it's going to be a pretty packed Christmas with Django Unchained, The Hobbit and Les Mis.

Baz Luhrmann wants money to finish The Great Gatsby, and do some reshoots, but Warner Bros. have said no...
