| In little more than a decade, director Edgar Wright has become one of the hottest names in cinema, and this is someone who started off making home-made films in his hometown of Wells in Somerset, then graduated to television with shows like Asylum and Is It Bill Bailey? But, he would work with Simon Pegg on Spaced for Channel 4, which became a cult hit. They would later do two films together, Shaun of the Dead (2004), a hilarious spoof of zombie horror films, and Hot Fuzz (2007), a hilarious spoof of action films, filmed in Wright's hometown of Wells. Both films did extremely well, and made it's main cast and director into big names. In Wright's case, Hollywood have come calling, but after being offered films such as Them and Ant-Man, he's heading for Toronto, Canada for his next film, based on a series of cult comic books by Bryan Lee O'Malley. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, will see Edgar Wright going solo, but he couldn't have found a better project to make as his first American, (or Canadian) film. Scott Pilgrim is a 23 year old slacker who lives in Toronto, he is a bass player in the band Sex Bob-omb. He lives in a flat with his 26 year old gay friend Wallace Wells, they share a bed together, yet Scott isn't gay. After a party, Scott falls in love with American delivery girl Ramona V. Flowers who delivers for Amazon.ca, but must defeat her seven "evil ex-boyfriends" in order to date her properly, superhero style!! It may not sound like much, but the comic books by Bryan Lee O'Malley are such a good read, done like a manga, but done with a good sense of humour. Especially when the books turn their attention to superhero style battles, which give it a unique twist. So far 4 books, have been written since 2004, Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life, Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World, Scott Pilgrim & The Infinite Sadness and Scott Pilgrim Gets It Together. They make for good reading and it'll be interesting to see what Wright does with them!! To play Scott, director Wright has made an excellent choice. He could have gone with big Hollywood names, but no, he's gone with a Canadian, a young one who has done very well for himself in recent time. Michael Cera, who people here will know him best as George-Michael Bluth in Arrested Development, and also for appearing in Superbad and Juno. His star is on the rise, and this will help further his rise to fame. To play his girlfriend, Ramona V. Flowers, Wright has gone for Mary Elizabeth Winstead, best known as Lee in Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof (2007), (connection there, as Wright directed the fake 70's British horror trailer Don't for Grindhouse, which Death Proof was a part of.) Also cast are Superman himself, Brandon Routh, has been cast as evil ex-boyfriend Todd Ingram!! Chris Evans off Fantastic Four and Sunshine fame will be playing another evil ex-boyfriend, Lucas Lee!! If anyone hasn't read any of the books yet, I highly recommend them, you can buy them here. It'll be interesting to see what Edgar Wright does with these books, the only major concern is whether they'll work in live action, as the characters take on a certain life of their own in the books, to try and translate that to film will be tricky. But, the books are simply a joy to read, and Wright has made a wise choice with picking this as his first Hollywood film, (or Canadian). Filming is set to start on March 23rd in Toronto, for a release in early 2010. That should give enough time for the name of Scott Pilgrim to buzz around, it should reach fever pitch by the time the film comes out.

| Filming has started, and here's Edgar's blog coming from Toronto!! Seeing as it's a bit of an action movie too, Edgar has brought in Bill Pope to shoot the film, Pope has shot action films such as The Matrix trilogy, Spider-Man 2 and 3, oh and Team America: World Police!! Plus, Jason Schwartzman has joined up as Gideon Gordon Graves!! | |
